Failing CAT? 200

Son's 88 245 DL/AW-70/260K miles with original catalytic convertor.

Car makes a tinny vibrating sound around 2300 rpm almost like marbles rattling around inside a tin can... when listening from outside the noise emanates from under the car, about amidships.

Can a failing catalytic converter begin to make noise as the matrix deteriorates?

Not sure what else it would be... checked all exhaust fasteners and clearances. Car still runs fine / passed emissions check 2 months ago. Noise started about a month ago.

Thanks

Robert
