I bought a locking gas cap for my 97 960 at least 6 months ago and tossed it in the trunk thinking I'll put it on next time I filled up. Well the old out sight out of mind began to set in and I forgot all about it. Well the Sunday before the Hurricane I filled up both cars. BTW The 960 sits in the garage which is locked.
The garage is a 4 unit with separate garage doors for each stall at my Apartment complex. So I went and pulled the 960 out since I'm taking it over to my Indy mechanic to install window screens. I'm heading down the road and as we all do I looked at all the gauges to make sure every thing is alright. Well the gas gauge is down some and I looked at the trip odometer and it says 30 miles.
I'm saying no way to myself. There is no way I used that much gas in 30 miles.
So I stopped at a station on my way and topped off the tank. 2.97 gallons came up on the pump. Well guys that was 1 gallon too much. The worst this car has ever gotten is 15.5 mpg. Needless to say I pulled the locking gas cap out and installed it. The reason I never installed it on the day I got was one of the Techs saw me buying it and made a comment on how difficult it was to get gas out of the newer Volvo's. Well it wasn't that difficult if someone got a gallon out of mine. Live and learn.
