Mother-in-law wants that A/C going 700 1990

I gave my mother-in-law my dear old 1990 740 173,000 miles and it's been all over the United States.
The A/C dies and she takes it to a hacker who somehow charges the R12 system with R134 which leaks out in 48 hours. He claims his sniffer picked up the gas at the cabin vents so that means the evaporator is leaking. He injected a visible dye as well which is all over the reciever dryer where he injected it. Everyone wants $1100 to fix this and one Volvo techie says the sniffer may have given a false reading. I have installed the Volvo conversion kit and will soon put in a rebuilt Seltec compressor. Any way to confirm dead evaporator ? Does changing it out require removal of the dashboard? I've seen the excellent info here on the blower box but can I get at the unit by simply removing the kick plate, then blower then the blower cowling? I do miss this car. My V90 is my first Volvo lemon. I thank you for your help
