Engine backfires when throttle blipped 120-130

Well, it sounds like badly retarded timing to me.

Sometimes I've had to do a lot of scrubbing with steel wool or an abrasive plastic pad to unearth the timing marks, but I've always found them eventually. They should be on the flange of the pulley closest to the timing gear cover.

Once you can see the marks, I'd go for 10 BTDC at 800-900 rpm idle, and then see how the advance works. I'd expect 17-19 BTDC at 1500 rpm, and 32-34 fully advanced at high rpm. More than that may feel snappier subjectively, but is unlikely to give you either best power or economy in a stock motor.

Unfortunately, setting to fastest idle really doesn't work on these cars. Would be nice, but it's not so.
