alternator...? 200 1984

Hi all. I have 2 volvos..an '84 and a '90. The 84 died a few days ago and I'm still working on that one (something in the fuel system wiring I think) But the 90 died last night (bad luck) and I'm pretty sure it's the alternator so... I'd like to take the 84 and put it in the 90. Does anyone know if these will be compatable? I have a chilton, but it sucks...
Any advice or instructions would be much appreciated. I don't "know" alot about working on cars, but with instructions and a diagram I have been able to figure out almost anything... thanks for the help!
