Electronic Tachometer 140-160 1973

I've been having a few problems with my tach on the Yellow Peril. Sometimes
it seems to work right and other times it goes to 1000 rpm as soon as I turn
on the ignition and the rpm shown seems to be about 1000 too high.
Just for kicks, I unhooked the wire to it and it STILL went to 1000 rpm as
soon as I turned on the switch. I started it up and noted that the indication
went up some from 1000 as the engine sped up even though only the power was
connected to the tach. I hooked it up again and it is doing the same thing
again.

Have any of you electronic gurus ever worked on one of these? Any idea where
the fault is that causes it to go to 1000 rpm? Is there an adjustment for
accuracy or number of cylinders? How about a circuit schematic?

Many thanks for any help you can provide. I know JUST about enough electronics
to be dangerous, especially with solid state. I can do tubes......

Thanks again,
