What have I done? Busted rheostat? (with text) 900 1997

Just replaced the shifter back illumination bulb on the 97 960.
Erratic lighting seems to have been caused by faulty bulb holder.
Final check of light- no go!
When I reconnected the battery I could hear all sorts of relays kicking in.
Finally got bulb (and other panel lights) working again by replacing 15A (blown) rheostat fuse. I must have caused a short.
Trouble is, these lights are on all the time now and the rheostat does not dim them.
What have I done, is the rheostat blown?

Thanks again,

Dan
