Tricky temperature gauge, I have to bang dash to get to work...HELP 200 1993

Okay, The temperature gauge in my wagon has a problem I can't seem to figure out. Sometimes when I am driving the temp gauge just bottoms out. I have to bang the plastic on the dash cluster and it fires right back up every time. I have a new temperature compensation board, and I have replaced the temperature gauge as well. It never fails to work when i pop the plastic. Any ideas on what to check and/or how to fix?
