Extracting Cruise Control Trouble Code - 1993 945t 900

I'm trying to diagnose why my cruise control isn't working. I've checked the vacuum lines and the brake pedal 'dump' switch - No obvious problems. When I activate the cruise (ignition on, motor off) in the driveway, I can hear tiny relays operating within the tiny black box.

My leading theories:
-bad ground through brake lamps - though the lamps work and I don't have a bulb out indicator
-bad speedometer signal - haven't checked this yet

I'd like to check for any trouble codes, but am unsure of how to proceed. I've read the FAQ and the 960 cruise control FSM that's floating online. When I connect the diagnostic 'probe' from box 'A' to port 2 in box 'B' I get a constant LED on - no flashing. Has anyone successfully pulled cruise control trouble codes? If so, what's my proper procedure? Vehicle on? In gear? Cruise on?

TIA,
Andrew
