Rear defroster light switch activates upon opening the tailgate... 200 1993

When I let the kids out at school and they pop open the wagon tailgate the rear defroster light comes on. It comes on almost as soon as the rear latch button is pushed in, not necessarily when the tailgate is lifted up. I have checked the wires as best I could and even had to repair them a few months ago to repair the rear break light yet this still happens. Any ideas on where to look in the tailgate? Does the rear defroster wire run down the driver side hinge or the passenger? thanks!
