500 dollars may have cost a lot more..... 200 1982

Gentlemen (and ladies if applicable),

I bought a 1982 volvo wagon about 6 months ago for about 500 dollars. I love the car, but it has its problems. 1st problem, it is leaking oil somwhere really bad, bad enough that oil gets on my back window. I have also noticed oil on the underside of my hood right above the center of the motor. I can't seem to trace the source and was wondering if you guys may be able to help me out. 2nd problem, sometimes my car will cut off, it's a manual tranny, so it seems like it's running, but once you stop, it's dead. This happens at stops and when driving down the road. Sometimes when the car is going down the road, it will do this, then it will back-fire and go again. One time it did this 10 times in one trip, it's really embarassing in town. I have my ideas, like the timing and stuff, but i am a novice when it comes to volvo's. 3rd problem, how do i get the overdrive (5th gear) to work? 4th problem, well more or less a question, what is the sond light? is it an oxygen sensor? I am 25 and working on my degree and working a full time job, so money is tight, I don't want to fix stuff that is not broken, or take it to a mechanic if possible. I bought the book on the car, so i am prepared to do the reapairs myself (I think). If you guys could help me out, I would be very happy.
