timing belt striped 200

Well, I've been helping my brother work on his '86 Volvo 240 wagon. What I thought at first was an ignition problem turned out to be something all together different The timing belt on his car is missing about a quarter of it's teeth. The cam shaft is not seized but obviously it as well at the distributor do not turn with the engine. I read that if the timing belt on the B230 breaks then the valves will be broken, is there anyway to find out if that happened?
