Bilstein HD's too large?? 200 1988

I'm trying to test-fit the Bilstein HD's I bought for my 1988 244DL, before painting the front strut tubes.

Try as I might, they won't go all the way into the tube. With about 5" remaining, they're very stuck in the tube, and I'm scratching the paint on the Bilstein by trying to push them in :-(.

Has anyone else had this experience? Any tips?

I have looked inside the tube and cleaned it out with a brush and solvent, no difference.

Related question: the install instructions say to compress the strut once prior to installation. What's the easiest way to do this? I'm tempted to use my 12-ton press (due to the height required) but I'm worried that I might damage the strut if I press too far.

Thanks!

Michel
