Fuel pump hangin' 900

I just replaced my single in-tank fuel pump ('93 940 with later Regina system). When I put it and the sender/float back in the tank, I didn't have the bracket that holds the pump attached to the sender unit though I think it was when I pulled it out. The pump/bracket assembly is currently just sitting in the tank next to the sender, attached by its hose and wires - and seems to work fine.
Should I have it attached to the sender unit somehow? I couldn't figure out how to do it without hampering the float from going up and down.
