While driving home today I stopped at a light and when I resumed moving, my 240 started to sputter and died. I tried to restart it, but didn't have any luck. I finally got it pushed over to a parking lot and I'm trying to figure out what the proplem is.
I've read through some of the forum postings, but haven't seen a specific case like mine.
I thought I must have run out of gas, but the guage indicated that I still had half a tank. I dumped in 2 more gallons from a can to be safe.
From several hours fooling around with it, this is what I have and I'm now stumped:
The car will start and idle, but if one gives it much gas, it will stall out and be very hard to start again. Once it is started again, it can be revved up as long as the revs are kept high. If one tries to return to idle, the thing usually dies and the petal seems to have no effect. Definately not enough power there to drive it.
I have checked the main fuel pump while it was running at idle and it is working. Also, I took the fuel filter off and it is not obstructed. I have fuel being pumped up to the engine compartment when the ignition is on (I verified this by turning on the ignition with the filter removed.) I have not tried any electrical diagnosics.
It acts as though it's not getting enough fuel. I just bought the car from a friend and it has not been driven in about 7 months, but I have put about 150 trouble-free miles on it since I bought it.
If it matters, I left it idling today for about 1/2 hour as the alternator belt was loose and I was away from home and didn't have my tools to fix it and it wasn't charging enough to charge the battery. That was taken care of by the belt tightening.
Should I try the fuel pump fuse jumper trick?
I'm going to inspect the fuse that is behind the battery.
Thanks for any help.
