960 engine identification 900

Someone in my area is claiming to have a 1995 volvo that has a replacement engine done about three years ago..my concern is that it might have an earlier engine than the 1995 model with the old timimg belts or a porous block problem. How do I identify which version of the straight six engine is in the car..thanks in advance...Jeffrey
