Maybe some of you remember my post a while ago asking about oil consumption.
Last winter I replaced the head gasket because of a small external coolant leak. (Rear of engine under the exhaust manifold.) I used perhaps 2 quarts of coolant during this time to top up. I expect most of it leaked externally. (Car was using about 1 qt of Mobil 1 per 2K miles and had 122k miles on the odometer.)
With the head off I found the leakage path was in a place where some of the coolant was probably going into the oil as well. The car did seem to have some moisture on the dip stick at the time. The head tested OK and the leakage seemed to be relegated to the gasket. With the car reassembled I ran the car one day, about 20 miles, to clear the residual gasket cleaner and machining chips out of the head and into the oil or filter before putting fresh Mobil 1 and a new filter on the car. I've since changed the oil once but have had to top off several times. I just started measuring carefully as I was under the impression the oil usage had increased. The last top off was needed after only 400 miles and the oil is getting dirty fast! I'm thinking the rings are stuck from coolant being in the oil.
I remembered some of the posts claiming good things for Auto-RX. I found the web site and read a lot of the linked stuff. I'm pretty skeptical but it looks like the engine needs something soon. Yesterday I ordered 2 bottles of Auto-RX and today I bought a leak down tester. Before I start the treatment I'm going to measure stuff so the results will have some semi-scientific information available.
The procedure will take me about 6 months, (65000 miles) & 4 cases of dino oil, 4 filters, plus the two bottles of Auto-RX, before I get to put the Mobil 1 back in and check the results. Wish me luck.
