142S Broken Frame? 140-160

Tonight I found out about a 1969 142S not far from here that by all accounts sounds not too bad, especially for the 300 bucks he is asking. I plan to take a look next week. However, the owner claims the frame is broken on the rear driver side shock tower, and that he was told by a 'mechanic' that it is not possible to fix. Does this sound likely? Is this damage common on these cars? I can only asume it might be caused by rust, and that being so, it would be a good indication of further severe rust that might be hidden from view.
Apparently the outer shell is not rusty, and he redid the dash, interior, trans, motor, etc not long before the frame went south.
Its not like I need another project, but I just can't seem to stop collecting them.
TIA
