Oil Viscosity - Gasoline Octane 900 1995

On my 945 Turbo Wagon (w/117.5K Miles)I use 5W30 motor oil. The oil is changed every 3K to 5K miles. Additionally, I have kept the service as specified by Volvo for all other components. Please provide opinions on the following:

Given the car has 117.5K miles, is it advisable to switch to a synthetic oil or would this create damage to engine and or seals/gaskets. What would the benefits be in changing to synthetic?

Secondly,Volvo "recommends" premium gasoline for this vehcile. I have always used premium fuel. With the price of gasoline as high as it is now getting in teh U.S., what would happen if I switched gradually to lesser octane fuel. Also, I am going through the thought process of either keeping this old brick or replacing it. I am torn...sounds stupid I know, but what is a grown man to do?

Thanks,

Kevin
