Uh Oh the Arrow Light is Blinking 900 1995

When I started out yesterday the transmission didn't seem right then after a stop it seemed like it was slipping when I started up again. At that point I noticed the 'Arrow' indicator on the dash was blinking.

The owners manual says when the Arrow is blinking there is a 'fault in the automatic gearbox'.

Before I head off to a transmission shop or the dealer does anyone know what the usual outcome of the blinking indicator means? Low fluid? New transmission needed? ...

Thanks for any ideas you may have.
