Harness damage? 200 1984

Hello,
The Haynes manual and the Bentley manual both say, in regard to the volvo/chrysler ignition computer, that unpluging the harness will damage it and the harness will need to be replaced. This may seem like a dumb question, but how? May be mine had been unpluged before I got my car and I am missing something. It has been suggested to me to try to swap a known good part for the suspected malfunctioning part to track down a fault. How does one do this whit the ICU without needing a new harness? If in fact my harness is damaged from my tinkering, is there anyway to undo the damage? If the harness can only be unpluged once, then the ones at the junk yard would be useless as replacements. Who does everyone buy their new harnesses from?
Thanks for your patience, Kenneth
