Okay, so I have my 1990 740 up and running again, after 14 months of it just sitting on the street. I am very excited about this, as I always wanted to be able to really work on this car and fix her back up. Now that I have another very reliable car I can afford to have this thing torn apart for extended periods of time and can invest in some of the special tools and teach myself how to work on this thing at a comfortable pace. I am not really all that worried about the cost at all, as this stuff will be spread out over the next five years or so, I imagine. And it will still end up being less that a car payment!
I dropped some money at IPD for a bunch of stuff to start with.
Here is a list of what I am going to get to try to make this thing sort of reliable again:
Bosch Extended Service Kit
rotor, cap, plugs, air/fuel/oil filters, spark wire set, timing belt, flame trap, diff gasket, magnetic oil drain plug (maybe fuel injector and filter seals if my car needs them)
Crank Pulley Holder Wrench
Headliner Kit
Electric Antenna Mast/plastic chain thingy
Forever Black
plastic headlight cleaner and polish
This ought to keep me busy for a little while.
My next burst of spending/work will include brake pads and rotors and front caliper rebuild kits and a new jack for the trunk.
Then motor and tranny mounts.
Then I plan on shocks, struts, heavy rear springs.
Then anti sway bars, etc.
Then I want 3 steel rims that are not full of flat spots and bends like some in my current set.
After that I plan on lots of engine and wiring stuff over time, as well as some new light lenses for the front and rear. (Nothing makes it look old like cracked, yellowed, scratched up plastic lenses . . . )
Now, before I start off on this adventure in spending, I am wondering if I am leaving out something obvious and important. Am I setting priorities properly? Am I being pretty comprehensive in my approach to this long-term project?
I want my 1990 740 to reach 500,000 miles and am halfway there now. I want it to be there, running pretty well, in 2020 or 2025. Why? Because of the novelty of the whole thing for one, and because I really like my brick for another . . . I guess I just want to see how long it will last.
Any advice or suggestions? I am of course leaving out the things that will break along the way, and that dang AC leak that will probably never get fixed . . .
Thanks for taking the time to read this long post!
