My 88' 245DL is on it's last limbs as it has gotten me on my last nerves. It's not starting consistently and has shut down on me a few times already.
I cleaned out the engine the *wrong* way by not sealing the dist. cap, nor the oxygen sensor. Afterwards it drove fine, but then the funny things started. First it was the steering wheel shaking on sharp turns, then it was a faint "click" at the 12 O'Clock position while turning. Now when I'm driving back home after having washed out the engine the car shuts down completely. It sat overnight and started up the next day. Since it was driven to/from NYC (from W. Hartford, CT) and around town. Again, it stalls out on me, but at home. It would start from time to time after hours of warm air drying the engine, but when I would turn on the driveway it shut down. It sat a week and then it starts again. I drove the kids to school this morning and it shut down on me. My mechanic looked at it today after I towed it over and he saw nothing wrong. He checked the electrical, distributor, and sparkplugs and everything looked good. The car started up fine for him, so I drove away losing no money, but with no sense of what to do to fix this.
BOTH times that the car shut down while driving were while I was travelling downhill AND turning at moderate speeds (less than 30mph). The mechanic said it must be something with the fuel system since the electrical checked out fine. This must be the first time I'm uncomfortable with my car actually starting.
To top it off the interior is fugly, so I'm figuring I can get a decent 740, or 940 Turbo wagon for $2k or less and call it a day.
