Thinking I might be able to get the pan down w/o extracting the motor, I spent the late afternoon/early evening trying to get it free.
My conclusion: it was a waste of time. It's impossible unless you winch the motor up.
However, in all the monkeying, the old oil pan gasket fell down around half of the pan, and i was able to pull it out undamaged. This gave me an idea that seemed to work. I slowly worked the new oil pan gasket around the pan itself and being extremely careful, I was able to get the new gasket up around the pan w/o actually removing the pan or damaging the gasket.
Incidently, if you've been following my voluminous posts, you've noticed that I recently replaced a host of gaskets after compression testing my motor and getting some quite respectable numbers (130-140 psi). I still lose oil like crazy, but aparrently not by burning it all up.
So, in crawling around under the car, disconnecting the gearbox support and the drivershaft, I realized that the underside and rear of the motor is still saturated with oil. I do not think I have a leaking rear main seal. It an updated IPD seal and there was no evidence of trouble when I switched gearboxes back in May. The oil is not dripping out of the bellhousing, but around the bellhousing. Oil loss back then was as bad as it is now, no better no worse.
My suspicion is the rear of the valve cover. I have a heavy cast aluminum IPD valve cover, and I put a new cork gasket in a couple weeks ago. However, the oil drip pattern on the bellhousing seems to indicate that oi has been seeping out of the back of the valve cover and oozing down the engine. There has been some definite loss around the oil pan gasket as well. Did I mention that one of the oil-pan bolts was missing??
Sooo....
I'm going to reattach oil pan and replace the missing bolt. Should I take this opportunity to use some silicone sealer on the gasket, or will the thick paper gasket be sufficient. I did not use silicone on the valve cover, and I suspect that it's why it is still leaking up there. Also, shoud I invest in one of those neoprene rubber valve cover gaskets that IPD sells?
Thanks for any help you can give.
P.S. I replaced the fuel pump spacer block and installed two new gaskets. I was losing oil there too.
