'83 GL Engine stalls when car accelerates 200

I have a friend who owns an '83 GL (and does not own a computer) and he was telling me last night that his car stops when he is sitting at a light and then tries to accelerate.

He just had a new internal fuel pump installed but that did not do the trick. I am not familiar with the GL's or what engine they even had. Any ideas on what to tell him to look for? He says it runs fine while he is driving, it only happens on that initial acceleration. Thanks
