90 sedan overheats 200 1990

My 1990 240 continues to overheat. I have changed the thermostat, fluid is topped off, water pump is quiet and the top hose gets warm as the engine warms (indicating circulation of antifreeze?).
Could the guage itself be faulty?
The car does not overheat when initially started and left at idle. It overheats slightly when moving fast but this lessons if i turn the heat on inside the car. When I come to a stop the car overheats considerably.
The belt that turns the fan is in good condition with about 1/4" slack. It looks like there is some kind of clutch on the fan. I wonder if the fan is supposed to turn faster as engine warms?
Is there some way to test the clutch? Is there some way to test the temperature guage? Thanks to all!
