Halogen lamps for the 164 140-160

I see that on the European models of the 164 they came with the lens and a removable halogen bulb instead of these sealed beam ones here in the States. My headlights never seem bright enough. Does anyone have the European ones on their vehicles in the US? Does it take some special wiring to convert them? And finally, is it worth the trouble? Thanks
