760 Strut upper 'bushing' problems 700 1989

Dear fellow Brickers:

I recently replaced my struts and did not re-install the Volvo donut-shaped washers/bushings that sit on the top of the strut "rod," for lack of a better term (I don't mean the proper strut rod that passes through the control arm and has the cone-shaped bushings so prone to failure). Maybe strut shaft might be a better term? There did not seem to be enough threads sticking up for the rod to pass through this approximately 3/4" thick rubber/metal-sandwiched bushing, so I just left it out. Can anyone tell me if it's a critical part? On the way to the front end shop, I didn't notice any usual knocking. The Black Bomber is now awaiting an inner tie rod end that I ordered from fcpgroton.com, and being as I am in Alaska, it might take a few more days before it arrives. I guess I could compress the springs and try to install the "bushing" on top of the strut mount. When I tightened down the 15/16" nut onto the thread (minus the part in question) I got enough turns so that I have a few threads exposed, and then the nut got too tight for me to hold the rod end with a 10mm wrench and I figured it was tight enought...I did notice in many pictures this very same bushing, such as in the ipdusa.com catalog, but after a bit of research, it appears that some folks have found that their particular strut replacement did not require this part.

If anyone can offer advice on this, I would appreciate your reply. I assumed (maybe incorrectly) that the rod might have been "drawn up" tight enough that the ridge on the strut shaft had engaged the bottom of the strut mounting plate and hence, it couldn't turn easily anymore...

Thanks in advance for your help,

Keep on Brickin'
