Gas gauge is unreliable 700

I drive a 1991 740 with about 120,000 miles. My gas gauge doesn't work. Since buying it two years ago I have been forced to reset the trip odometer to know when to refill the tank. I plan to replace the float device in my car with one taken from a 1990 760 Turbo.
1st question is: Will these parts interchange?
2nd question is: Is the float device my problem?
Any and all help will be appreciated.
