Bad battery or charging problem? 140-160 1973

I continue my battle with electricity.

The symptoms:

After a week of sitting, the battery (five years old) is low. Car starts with a jump. I drive 15 minutes to an appointment. Car restarts reluctantly, and on the way home, the blinkers seem a little slow. This morning: flat battery again. The amp light never came on.

Help me with the diagnosis.

I'm replacing the battery this p.m. -- it's time -- but I don't want to run a new battery down. The slow blinkers make me wonder whether the alternator (Motorola) isn't charging. Would a hinky external voltage regulator not set off the amp light? Could someone remind me of the proper voltage measurements on a system that's charging properly?

In the event, what's the wisdom on switching to a Delco alternator?

Thanks in advance,

Steve M.
