Working but unreliable gas gauge 200 1987

The gauge reads full when the tank is full. And empty when the tank is empty. My problem is that the needle drops too fast when it gets below half. It moves into red when there is still a lot of gas left.

I should mention that this started after being rear-ended in stop-and-go traffic. (No visible damages to the car other than some silver paint on the hitch. I had the car professionally examined afterwards.) Given this background, I assume the problem is related to the float mechanism or the sender unit. Any tips on how I attack this will be very welcome. I'm tired of relying on the odometer.

Erling.
