The glowing manifold could be indicative of a failed knock sensor - the ICU retards timing when no signal, or a faulty signal, is picked up by the knock sensor. I can't see that being as sudden & dramatic a failure as you describe though. Maybe an ignition miss caused a backfire that knocked the converter honeycomb loose and plugged up the converter outflow. Any exhaust pressure when you cover the tailpipe with your hand?
