I've gambled that you're right and ordered a knock sensor ... expensive $72. had to get genuine volvo... but eEuroparts always delivers fast. brickboard FAQ also point toward knock sensor.. i.e, engine cooled for an hour and started up and revved fine. a poster got 2 minutes out of his before it relapsed. you are the only info a have on the glowing hot manifold, though.
