Instrument Panel 200 1989

Hello all, this is my first post as I am now the proud owner of a 1989 volvo 240 5sp with about 150K miles. The car is in great shape but I do have a couple of little things that I wanted to see if I could get some help with. First of all the the back lighting of the instrument panel does not work and I cannot see the gauges at night, is there any way to fix this without swapping the panel? I have checked all the fuses and they seem alright, (though I admit I had never seen fuses like the ones in my volvo) and the light for the tach is functioning.
Also there is a low pitched moan while accelerating that I was told by the guy I bought it from, and with more experience I think he was right, that seems to be coming from the rear end. I have checked the fluid and it is full. Is this normal. Should I start looking for a replacement.

Anyway...thanks for any help you can give me

Ethan
