240 Diesel auto clunking 200

My 84 240 diesel automatic clunks into third gear at low speeds. When I am in town at about 30 mph in second and ease off the accelerator to slow down it clunks loudly into third gear - it seems to be coming from the rear differential. When accelerating normally it shifts very smoothly through all of the gears. The u-joints seem good - no clunking going into reverse. Problem with the differential? Problem with the transmission? I would rather it didn't shift into third at low speeds and have taken to driving in 2 around town. Any thoughts anyone?
