Unitended/Continued accelleration 700 1991

Hello Brickboarder,

I have an intermittent problem that occurs once or twice a month. The problem is that my car 1991 745 Turbo with automatic transmission and no cruise control would occasionally continue to move forward when I take my feet off the gas pedal instead of slowing down.

Let me go into more detail.
1. The problem always occur when the car is at complete stop.

2. I step on gas pedal to move forward.

3. I take my feet of the gas pedal to slow down and or make a turn but the car continues to move forward at the same pace. It does not increase in speed but it also does not decrease it speed like it should.

4. When this intially started I would use the following procedures to stop the car. I have to immediately step on the brake pedal and the car will eventually stop but it take longer to stop than normal because the car feels like it is still trying to mover forward while I apply the brakes.

5. I know use the following procedures when this occur. I shift the car into neutral and apply the brakes.

My question to you volvo gurus is what could be causing this problem and have any of you run across it or had it happen to you. I thank you for taking the time to answer and help me with my problems.

PS. A) I did not/do not step on the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal.
B) The car does not accelerate (ie. increase it speed) it just does not continues on to move forward at the same speed instead of slowing down like it normally does when you take your foot off the gas pedal.
C) The car is otherwise in tip top condition.
D) I have already conducted a search of your FAQ and Forums for this condition. I only found one hit that was close to this condition and it was posted by Evan R on Sunday, July 1999, at 1:02 pm with the Subject Heading of "Re: Warning: Sudden Aceeleration 𖘴/900].
