Intermittent Fuel Guage 200 1990

My fuel guage dies when the car warms up. It works when the car is cold, but after somewhere between 10 and 40 miles of driving, it drops completely. I would love to avoid tearing out the rear floor of my wagon (especially given the weight of its third seat), so I was wondering if there were any easier way to diagnose it. I have no fear of removing the instrument pod.

If it makes a difference, I noticed once recently that my temp guage wasn't reading right (not concurrent with the fuel guage problem), wither, and I am getting an intermittent bulb failure warning when I use the brakes.

Do these guages work like the old ones, with a bimetallic strip wrapped in wire, so that it deflects as the circuit heats up and moves the needle? Knowing is half the battle, right?
