Thanks for the input regarding the problem with this car. We have now tried a different Ignition Control Module, Jetronic engine control gizmo with another injector control module for good measure. Nothing has done anything to correct the problem.
I have seen it first hand now and just as the mechanic described, the car starts and idles perfectly but begins to "pulse" as if someone were switching it off and on when the throttle is increased. The looms that were roasted when the alternator went out have had their (replacement) splices rechecked and the polarity to the coil verified. In that car the coil leads are vastly different so their proper polarity was easy to check. The original distributor had its pulse sensing component damaged in the alternator altercation so the entire distributor was replaced with one from an '87. That got the car from not starting at all to running as described above. Everyone keeps saying that since it runs so well at idle, the distributor is doing what it is supposed to do but we are really puzzled.
Good fuel pressure, good fuel supply, good spark, , even when the pulsing starts. The air mass components were checked as well. This mechanic has lots of Volvo experience along with most of the imports on the road and is stumped like I have never seen before. Anyone with additional suggestions will be helpful. The next step is getting another wiring loom set from the bone yard and starting over with the wiring repair that started this whole mess. Thanks again to all the Bricksters lending a line.
