Setting the timing. 120-130

The B20 engine is rebuilt and has an Isky SP cam in it. The distributor has a vacuum advance (it's been recommended on this Board by J. Parker and the vacuum unit is from a mid seventies Saab Turbo).
What happens is I set the timing, with the vacuum line disconnected, at 10 BTDC. It holds steady. Then I turn the motor off to snug the distributor and put the line back on. When I put the light back on it I discover it's at around 30 BTDC. Why would that be? I tried it a number of times - vacuum line connected and disconnected, cold and then warmed up, nonvacuum advance distributor and with the stock distributor - always with this result. Any suggestions?
Why does an engine overheat if the timing is not right?
And if the timing's not right the cam can be ruined? Why is that?
