Radio cuts out 200 1988

I'm going crazy. My radio in my '88 240 wagon works fine sometimes, cuts out other times, or won't work at all. I need suggestions on what to check and in what sequence. There is some staticy sound in the on/volume switch, and front left door speaker almost never works. Factory radio by the way. Thanks in advance for any help!
