960 wagon flash up arrow light 900 1997

ONLY when it rains, the up arrow light and check engine light appear on the dash board, the transmission "W & E" alternately blink. The code for the PNP sets. Where could water be shorting out the unit setting the code and is there anyway to reset the code and light w/o a code reader. holding down on the reset button and turning on the ignition seems to turn out the check engine light but I need to reset the trans code. Ever heard this one before ?
