Fuel Gauge is being flaky :'( 700 1990

My '90 740 is starting to act up again. I've been noticing how the fuel gauge is never very accurate. Whenever I start my car - I notice how the gauge always shows the needle a little less than where I left it when I turned it off.

After a while, it would recover - and inch its way upwards. It was never more than a marginal difference, but I could always tell there was one.

Sometimes when I fill up the tank and start the car - the gauge remains blank - and then slooooowwwwlly inches its way to Full.

Today, I filled up gas, and get on my way back from work and about 5 mins into it, I noticed the gauge started to go down DRAMATICALLY (almost like in a movie, when someone sabotages the car) It went from full till about 1/8th finished when I pulled over and feared for a leak or something. But there was none (All this took a few seconds - I could SEE the gauge going down), and when I restarted - it went back up to ALMOST full, and then again inched its way up while I was driving.

Please advise...I'm really starting to worry about the worthiness of this car - because I'm running into one problem after another.
