Our 95 940 Turbo had the ABS light coming on regularly. Several different codes would come up, usually related to a missing signal from the rear sensor, but sometimes related to one of the front sensors and once or twice the code was for a faulty computer.
Based on advice I got here I had the front sensors removed and cleaned and also tried a new sensor in the rear. None of this helped, though the mechanic mentioned that the front sensors were very dirty.
Finally I broke down and took it to the Volvo dealer for diagnosis figuring they would be more familiar with the wiring to try to find the problem. For $90 they checked the code and told me they could do nothing more until they replaced the computer and 2 relays. This would cost $1,200 and might not fix the problem, but they felt fairly sure that it would. They said that since the problem was intermittant, it would take too much time to try to rule out the other possibilities when the problem could be the computer or relays.
I decided there was no point in spending a lot of $ on the computer and relays if the relays could be the cause, so I bought them from the dealer and put them in myself but that did not help. I decided to take a chance on the computer and ordered a used one from Erie Vovo. They warned me that the computers on the 940 almost never go bad and they would not take it back (unless it was defective) but I bought it anyway. Anyway, my mechanic installed it at no charge (it must be easy to do) and so far we have had it about 1 week with no ABS light coming on.
So, it seems that the 940 computers do at least occassionally go bad. Our car seems to have the unusual problems, becuase also this year the fuel pump died. The common thought is that usually it is the fuel pump relay or radio suppression relay, but in our case these did not help but the new fuel pump has been running fine.
