Oh, no, your instinct regarding the purchase price and my risk tolerance is absolutely right. Were it not my daily driver, I would be all over playing this by ear. But, since I have Monday to do the work, and have to be at work on Tuesday, I require a certain expedience. I think I will see if my nearest dealer has one in stock; if they do, I'll go get it, if not, it's risk city.

I tried probing the connection, but not enough of it is left even to do that. When I get it out, I'll try to post a picture, along with one of the tool I just finished fabricating to get the lock ring out.
