HELP! 760 Stuck at Non-Volvo Shop 700 1989

The 1989 760 would not go last week. It would barely run and apparently was trying to run rich and got hot. Had it towed to a local shop - usually good mechanics - but they are stuck. They found a relay that needed soldering - now it's getting too much fuel and will barely run - black smoke coming out the tailpipe. He's talking about it being the computer, but I understand that is rarely the case. Please help if you can as I am in my wife's 940 and she needs her car.
