Charging....or lack of charging ,and the idiot light 200

I just bought a 86' 245 wagon. As I was driving it tonight I noticed the battery idiot light on the dash glowing ever so dim. I checked the voltage across the battery terminals with the car running and it was only 11.13 volts. I thought a good number should be about 14.4 volts. With the engine off the voltage across the terminals was 11.3 volts. Any ideas what the problem might be? Bad alternator? Bad voltage regulator? or could it be the environmently friendly wiring harness wire to the alternator that appears to be crumbling? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
