Erratic Speedo 700 1990

Hello. I have a 1990 740GL w/ 93k miles. My speedometer works eratically. It'll work just fine and then suddenly stop working. Then just as quickly it'll start working again. This is happening daily. No special conditions for when it happens. Sometimes on the highway, sometimes just driving around town. Is it a cable gone bad or is the speedo shot? Best remedy?
