Knock sensor + timing question 700 1989

Had some work done, replaced distributor. Tech then set the timing dead on (his words). Idle is a now bit high & I have some valve clatter under load.

Read the FAQ's on the knock sensor, and I am going to replace that. I was wondering if after I replace the sensor - should I get him to recheck the timing & is dead on the best place to set the timing on the B230FT? The reason I ask is I had thought I read that a slightly retarded timing would give a bit more power - less chance of valve clatter.

Thanks
