240 air conditioning 200 1990

The a/c is compltetly dead in my wife's wagon with 165,000 miles on it. It used to take three or four cans of 134a (I put the new spigot on the compressor) and work about 60%. Now it takes it in and nothing happens. It's winter in New England soon so I don't have to worry about this today, but come the spring, my wife wants it fixed. Has anyone had a good experience with replacing the compressor and whatever else? I am rluctant to sink a lot of money into this and not get a good result.
