gasoline smell 200 1990

my car reeks of gasoline. it is happening when the gas station attendant tops off the tank. it never smells like gas when i fill (i don't top off) and it's rare that i go to full serve - twice in the last 3 weeks.
does anyone know of a way to get the smell out - and why it's happening when they top off?
Also, I'm taking a road trip from boston to my new life in Denver, CO. Anyone have ant tips on what i should do to make sure the car makes it ok.
And anyone know a good volvo mechanic in denver area?
